Onyang is renowned for its historical hot springs, which have a legacy spanning over 1,000 years. According to the history documented during the Three Kingdoms, Koryo, and Chosun eras—covering more than 1,400 years—kings and royal families frequently visited Onyang to relax and seek healing. With Korea's remarkable economic growth during the 1970s and 80s, Onyang evolved into a major tourist destination. The Onyang Hot Spring Hotel, one of the first establishments to feature the largest public spa, welcomed both local residents and tourists, benefiting greatly from this tourism surge.

However, the Onyang Hot Spring Hotel is in need of renovation due to its aging buildings. To make this renovation project socially engaging and inspiring, the hotel sought the help of young muralists. We, at the City Mural Collective, were honored to be invited as one of the first muralist groups. We were thrilled by this recognition, joining as the only high school muralists' group with other more experienced professional muralists. The hotel's renovation project manager expressed appreciation for our vision to transform old, overlooked areas into visual attractions through mural paintings inspired by traditional Korean artifacts.
To make our participation even more meaningful and memorable, we undertook an ambitious mural project featuring images of the Turtle Ship, a symbol of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's victory over Japan. Throughout the design and painting process, we felt a deep sense of pride and fulfillment, enhanced by the positive reactions from the hot spring visitors. As this was our first paid job, we decided to donate our earnings to the Culture and History Department of the Onyang City Government to help promote the honorable and beautiful history of Onyang and its hot springs.
